Be Positively Prepared for Back to School This Year

I have received information and materials from JOHNSON & JOHNSON CONSUMER, Inc., McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division, LLC. The opinions stated are my own. This is a sponsored post. #PositivelyPrepared #BacktoSchool #CollectiveBias

IMG_3472-3

It’s that time of year when parents are running around trying to make sure they have everything they need for Back to School. Whether it be new clothes, backpacks, shoes, or supplies to be dropped off at back to school night. We all know the hustle. It’s one that we look forward to yet dread at the same time. But there’s one thing we as parents don’t really think about when you think back to school. Our health. The kids as well as ours (the parents). It’s important for the whole family and I think way too often that gets pushed to the side.

Going back to school means the spread of germs throughout the eight plus hour day while our children are there. Sure, the sickies find there way to us when they’re not in school but they seem to run rampant those first few months. I have two children in elementary and one in middle. Luckily it seems my oldest, who’s 12, has kind of outgrown the get sick at the drop of the hat (or germ) the older he gets. But sadly my younger two, 8 and 9 have not. Because of this we made a trip to Target and bought some extra supplies for the home. I have a game plan in place this year!

First step, expect the unexpected

Not everything goes as planned. Whether it be a change in plans, a unexpected rainy day, or health concerns such as the common cold, flu, headaches. With kids you just never know. You know it’s coming, that first fever of the school year. So why not stay on top of it by keeping some Children’s MOTRIN® on hand. Not only is Motrin nice to have on hand for fevers but it can also help with symptoms from the common cold, flu, headache and sore throats. All of which I am sure we will experience this school year. A nice thing is it comes with three flavor options, Bubble Gum, Grape and Cherry.

It's never easy seeing your babies under the weather.

It’s never easy seeing your babies under the weather.

Second step, always be prepared.

My mother always told me you could never be too prepared. Naturally I didn’t believe her until I became a mother myself. Now I know better and plan for everything. If things aren’t planned out it can lead to stress on the body. Stress comes in many forms. For me it’s muscle aches and pains and it is something that I have dealt with for many years. Recently my oldest started to get horrible growing pains, I have never experienced them so I had no idea what was happening when he would suddenly wake up crying in pain. The pain would stop him from playing and doing normal day to day activities. Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream will soothe minor aches, muscles soreness as well as joints pains such as a backache, arthritis, strains, bruises and even sprains. Luckily someone suggested Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream to me and it has been so helpful for us that I even keep a tube in my purse.

Third step, get a good nights rest

Being a single mom of three growing kids while working a full time job is rough enough as it is, but suffering from migraines and a bit of insomnia makes it bit harder at times. TYLENOL® PM is a two step process, it helps to relieve pain as well as helping you fall fast asleep and STAY ASLEEP. This is a sleep aid I actually feel comfortable using as it is non-habit forming when used as directed. I’ve decided it’s time, and you know as they say, you have to take care of yourself if you expect to take care of your babies.

IMG_3467-1

Since my oldest is 12 now and in middle school he has a harder work load then my other two children. His backpack is bigger then the backpack I had in high school. Now add in a three inch binder filled with school work as well as all of his school books and a bike lock, its heavy. That kind of weight can put a strain on anyone, especially a growing boy. Since he can use the adult versions of medications, I keep a kit just for him separate from the two little’s. Here is an example of what I have set aside.

IMG_3597

What you need in your home kit to ensure you can be Positively Prepared for Back to School with a Tween

  • Ultra Strength BENGAY® Cream (to relieve minor muscle aches and pains)
  • TYLENOL® (trusted relief for muscle aches and backaches)
  • Ice packs & Heat packs (to relieve inflammation from muscle strains)
  • Ace bandage (to help provide stability and relieve discomfort from strains)
  • Essential oils (to provide therapeutic relief)
  • Bandaids
  • Toothbrush (a spare on hand to ensure healthy teeth)
  • Deodorant (a must for any tween)
What a difference seven years makes. He's almost as tall as me.

What a difference seven years makes. He’s almost as tall as me. As he grows he’s learning independence and part of that is taking care of himself, the home kit has come in handy in helping him learn whole body health.

Get positively prepared with the right pain relief for you and your family at Target. Everything is conveniently located in the Health and Beauty area and all really easy to find. Tell me, what are some of your go to ways to keeping sure you and your family will have a healthy school year? Do you have kids with different medicine kits? Have you used any of the items we purchased as a way to stay ahead of the game? I’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas!

Never run out of essentials with #AvoidTheOops

This is a sponsored post for SheSpeaks/Walmart

Every one has experienced those moments when you’re taking care of business and you reach for the um…..toilet paper, only to realize It’s. All. Gone!

2

We’ve all been there. It’s one of those “noooooooo” moments we don’t like to talk about. Yet, I’m totally talking about it. Yes it’s embarrassing, yes I wish I had stock piled the darn toilet paper, yes I wish I had remembered to look at my shopping list instead of getting distracted by all the shiny things that I don’t need and will never use, yes I have hung my head in shame when I realized what am I going to do now? Alas, we’re all human, and forgetfulness happens.

So where does this leave me? I’d say up a creek without a paddle BUT there’s hope. www.avoidtheoops.com” target=”_blank”>AvoidTheOops.com can save you like it has saved me. I’m sure you’re all wondering how on earth a website can save you. Well it would be my honor to explain. Simply head on over to www.avoidtheoops.com” target=”_blank”>AvoidtheOops.com and you’ll find your essentials such as toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent and more.

3

One of the conveniences of shopping online is not having to haul bulk items yourself through the store, up onto the check out stand then into the car. Oh yeah, then in the house to eventually put away. You can sit in the comfort of your own home and have everything delivered to your doorstep. What is better then that. And when you spend $50 or more you get free shipping.

1384

So no matter if you run out of essentials or like to keep up so you don’t run out, www.avoidtheoops.com” target=”_blank”>AvoidTheOops.com is a great place to get all of those essentials you never want to run out of. Like say three different types of floor cleaners….I have a confession, I love floor cleaners. I know odd, but dude the floor can never be too clean right!

Don’t tell me I’m the only one slightly obsessed with floor cleaners. Share, what is essential you would stock up on?

Make Memories & Travel Safely with the Toyota Tacoma #Giveaway

This is a sponsored post. I received compensation in exchange for writing this review. Although this post is sponsored, all opinions are my own.

There are many reasons to buy a new vehicle. Looks, interior, special features, etc. But for me, the most import thing in purchasing a new car would be the safety features and how they relate to our experience. The 2016 Toyota Tacoma comes with a plethora of safety features.

NIK_1203 copy1

See I live in Oklahoma. Land of the unknown and crazy weather. This year we have already experienced an ice storm. While I am sure most of the native Oklahoman’s aren’t too effected by this type of weather, this little ole California girl gets quite nervous at traveling the roads during snow, ice or any type of major weather circumstances. So anything that helps keep my babies safe while I brave the roads is a huge plus in my book.

While I know a defroster may not be a big deal for some it’s big for me. To have a fully functioning defroster that not only works, but works good is an amazing thing when it is freezing cold outside, and half your vehicle is frozen solid in ice. The same goes for the mirror defrosters. Um genius!

NIK_1198 copy1

I have a serious love hate relationship with technology. I love the endless possibilities it brings, but I don’t like the distractions they can cause. But I have to gush about the technology in the Tacoma for a moment. With every new vehicle comes a new blind-spot to get used to. But that was not something that was an issue with the Tacoma because of the Blind Spot Monitor & Rear Cross-Trafiic Alert. It pretty much eliminates those heart racing moments we’ve all had when you may accidentally merge into a lane and not see a car in your blind-spot. A warning light will illuminate on your mirror should this situation arise. And then there is the back up camera. The Rear Cross Traffic Alert will sound off if you are too close to an object or a car.

I think too often we get stuck in the hustle and bustle of daily life that we forget to slow down and enjoy. Toyota helped give that moment to my daughter and I. We were able to attend our first college football game. Not only was this a first for both of us, but it was also her birthday! Now while I may get shamed for going to an OSU game and LOVING it (I live in Sooner land aka Norman), we were just in awe of feel and experience. It is something we will be able to look back on for many, many years to come.

Spring Cleaning has begun #SmellsClean

This post contains sponsored content.

Oh yes, I looooove this time of the year. The birds start chirping, the flowers start to bloom. Yay for allergies but it’s so pretty you can’t help love it. It’s almost like a new beginning even though were a quarter of the way through the year. Another awesome thing about spring time is spring cleaning. Not many people would look forward to that tid bit. In fact I used to be one of them but this year, this year I am loving it!

flower

With the cleaning out of unnecessary items brings about cleaner houses and we all know that when the house is clean, mama is happy. Less mess equals less cleaning. Who wouldn’t be happier about that. But getting it done early is the key. That way you have more time to be outside enjoying nature with your family. One of my many ways to keep a fresh house is by using air fresheners. I never knew that there were other people who thought this too!

Air fresheners are a natural part to the cleaning process. In fact many people think that a home isn’t clean until it smells clean. I am one of those people. Sure seeing a clean house is amazing but walking into a house that smells absolutely amazing is beyond wonderful. It just adds an extra oomph. A friend of mine came over a few weeks ago and when she walked in she said “your house smells like you”. I must have given her a funny look because she immediately said it was a good thing. When she used to come over to my old house she said it always smelled amazing and she said it was refreshing to come to the new house and have the familiarity of my favorite scents throughout the house.

So yes, in addition to going through some major spring cleaning lately I have been burning candles and melting wax like it is going out of style. I think others in my town are of the same mind set because last time I visited Walmart the air care isle the shelves we’re almost cleaned out. I think from the new line, Glade Hello Spring, there may have been two or three of the oils left. All the candles and wax melts were completely gone! Color me bummed. It sure is a good thing that I stocked up the other week or I wouldn’t be able to walk into my house and smell one of my new scent obsessions. Currently I have two. The first being the Poppy Groove wax melt. Being from California and smelling the poppies every year when we would go see the fields of them I wasn’t sure what to expect. But oh my yum, this scent is delicious. Yes I used delicious to describe a wax melt.

poppy groove

Eeek, now that I see my wax burner up and close I realize it could use a bit of cleaning as well.

My other obsession is the Peach Daiquiri candle by Walnut Candles. I have a few of their candles and if you have never checked them out I highly recommend it. Walmart carries a huge selection with over 700 different candles you’re guaranteed to find at least one that you will fall in love with.

IMG_3276

So what are you waiting for? Go visit your local Walmarts scent isle and browse Glade’s new Hello Spring line and Walnut Candles vast selection. If you do be sure to let me know what your favorite scents are to bring in the fresh start of the season into your home!

The Holidays are Here, Enjoy Winter Smells with Holiday Scents

This post contains sponsored content.

Holiday Scents

Did you know that eight out of ten families start to decorate for the holidays on Thanksgiving week/weekend? I was never one of those statistics until this year. I have always been one of the procrastinators. You know the one’s that wait until a week or two before the holidays. It was either that or completely skip decorating, just do a tree and stockings and call it a day. Yeah sadly I did that more times than I would like to admit. But this year I am not sure what came over me. Last weekend I got a tree and have started setting up shop.

Christmas Tree

It may be small but it’s up and I love it

With this being my first year having a fake tree (gasp) I am kind of missing the smell of a real tree. So what does one do when stuck in this conundrum? Why fill your home with scents of the season! Holiday scents are a very easy and quite inexpensive way to decorate. Spruce tree burning in the kitchen while Christmas music plays in the living room means one thing….let the holidays begin!

Scents Galore

Scents Galore at the store

If spruce trees aren’t your thing then you have a wide variety to choose from. My local store shelves were a little cleaned out on certain items but one scent that always helps me get in the holiday spirit is mint…peppermint. Peppermint by itself, peppermint mocha, peppermint cookies, mint in tea. Any form of mint just always makes me think of snow and Christmas time. Mint has a way of giving the feeling of cleanliness, almost like it #SmellsClean So imagine my excitement when I saw this Hot Cocoa & Mint special edition candle from Glade.

Hot Cocoa & Mint Candle

Yes I bought a few, okay maybe like four. I may need to buy more since I’ve been burning them at all hours. Oddly the scent of mint in one room and spruce in another meshes well. Well at least to my senses. It’s like a holiday overload minus the over and the load. The fun thing about using scents in your home is letting your children get involved. If you have a nightstand in your children’s rooms why not get a small tree, let them decorate it how they please and you an spray it with their favorite holiday scent. When they’re older they can do wax candles but my children are still on the younger side so sprays are the safer route for us.

I also have the Glade plug in (OMG I LOOOOOVE these things). Having more than one animal in the house is new to me and I admit….not my most favorite thing in the world but I as well as the kids are adjusting to it. One of the things that I feel has helped in having a plug in in every room so the only smell in that area is a pleasant one. Go figure, I ran out the other week for the one’s I have in the kids rooms so I shall be planning a trip to the local store tomorrow to replace them. I would love to see if my store carriers the Hot Cocoa & Mint in the plug ins to add to my collection, if not the Merry Citrus Melody sounds like it would smell amazing and maybe a bit more kid friendly to the nose.

Now the only thing we’re missing is a fireplace to hang our stockings!

Carter’s Friends & Family Sale #CartersFam

I participated in an Influencer Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Carter’s. I received a gift card to facilitate my shopping trip and to thank me for participating.

Carters Collage3Carter’s a trusted name in children’s clothing, makes it easy to find cute and thoughtful gifts for little ones this holiday season. Available in sizes newborn – 7, Carter’s proves an easy, one-stop shop for adorable outfits this holiday season.

With my kids getting older I haven’t shopped at Carter’s as much as I used to. I had always thought of infant and toddler clothing when I thought of Carter’s but did you know that they also make big kid clothes?!? Of course since finding this out I’ve been to the store twice and I’ve been online more times then I should probably admit. And what I’ve found….so darn cute! I may or may not have a slight problem with kids clothes. I have a hard time not buying it all, especially for boys because it seems that the amount of cute boys clothes available compared to girls clothes is slim. Why this is, I have no idea but Carter’s has such a big collection I was in seventh heaven browsing it all. I told my husband we need someone we know to have a baby boy asap so I can go hog wild on their baby clothes. Seriously so much cuteness!

Carters Collage4

I know you’re all wondering what we got so here’s a little breakdown. For my youngest we got a complete outfit. Pants, shirt and a button up shirt to go over and because one can never have too many pajamas I also got him a new set of those.

Carters Collage

I wasn’t able to get a photo of my daughters pajamas, she was being shy but they are so cute and soft! I loved that it was a three piece set that included shorts as well as pants (pictured below). Perfect for winter or summer.  Now here is a new tid bit of information I just learned about Carter’s. They recently introduced an extended sizes area to their website. I do not believe it is in the stores yet. At least it’s not in our local store. They carry infant through 7 in store but online they carry up to size 12! So of course as soon as I found that out I went shopping again. I also got the most adorable little green and blue dress for my niece when we went to the store but since it’s her Christmas present and I’ve already I wrapped it I sadly do not have a picture. Besides I wouldn’t want to ruin the surprise.

Carters Collage1Right now Carter’s is having an amazing sale. The Friends & Family Sale. In addition to end of year clearance they are offering an additional 25% off your ENTIRE purchase through December 24th. I told you amazing. With our trip we saved over $20 just with the 25% off, and that doesn’t even include the fact that everything in the store was already on sale! Plus when you spend over $50 in stores you will receive a $10 off reward for your next visit, with no minimum purchase required.  Have I mentioned before how much I love a good sale? The Friends & Family Sale is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. If you are looking for quality clothing for your little one’s I highly recommend Carter’s. And don’t forget to print your coupon before you go! You can also check out their Facebook page for news and sales information.

Celebrating Thanksgiving with Friends #UdisFriendsgiving

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Udi’s

Friendsgiving7

Thanksgiving is not just a time for family but also a time with friends. Friends are just as important to me as some family members. Since moving to Oklahoma I’ve had to make new friends and I’ll be honest, it was not easy. Probably because I am picky LOL but I don’t make friends as easily as I used to when I was younger. But the one’s I do make mean the world to me. and I am thankful for each and every one of them. When Udi’s asked if we celebrated Friendsgiving I figured hey, what better time to show my appreciation for my friends than celebrating Friendsgiving!

One thing we are trying in our journey to eating healthier is trying more and more gluten free items. My husband may not be aware of this fact but I doubt he take issue with it. We’ve also tossed up going vegetarian which is funny considering I decided to throw out tradition this year and break the mold in our Thanksgiving celebrations.

The menu consisted of:

Meatloaf  (hence my early laughter at the mention of going vegetarian)

Roasted asparagus

Rice Pilaf

UDI’s Harvest Crunch Muffins

Decoy Wine (delish)

We also snacked on some fresh vegetables and UDI’s Whole Grain Bread topped with home made bruchetta (extra basil for us).

I am actually quite proud because I am not the best party planner. Actually I don’t plan, I do things last minute and I have never actually decorated a table. Considering all of that I think every thing came together surprisingly well.

Friendsgiving

The kids tend to be a wee bit picky at times so in addition to the scrumptious meal above I made a separate meal for them just in case they didn’t like what was served. I may or may not have made entirely too much food but on the positive leftovers were the bomb!

My mac n cheese may not have been gourmet because it was an after thought but it was mighty tasty. I mixed in some cream cheese and sharp cheddar and cut back on the milk and was left with this really creamy goodness. The kids devoured all of their food and even had helpings of meatloaf. Success would be an understatement.

Friendsgiving5

Friendsgiving6

Since moving here two years ago I now know of three stores close to us that carry Udi’s products which makes me a very happy gal since I couldn’t find Udi’s anywhere when we first came here. To find out what stores Udi’s is carried in near you check out their product locator here.

Thank you to Udi’s for providing supplies and inspiration for our fabulous Friendsgiving meal!

Verizon FiOS Empowering Our Youth #PlayLikeaGirl

PlayLikeAGirl2

When growing up I had a love-hate-love relationship with sports. I definitely enjoyed playing sports, but my interests waned easily and this often led to my deserting the fun of sport for the mall or boys. Looking back I regret some of the times I didn’t see my various interests through to the end, especially when it came to athletics. The sport that kept my interests captivated for the greatest amount of time was soccer. For seven years I played and created lasting memories that I still hold in high regard today. However, it was a short seven years.

Looking back I could have played all the way through high school and possibly longer if I hadn’t given in to my wanderlust. Even though soccer was the sport that grabbed my interest and attention, I did have the opportunity to play another sport that gave me the feeling of teamwork and empowerment and that was powder-puff football. My position as kicker was crucial (lol), but the experience nonetheless provided a grip of good times that will last a lifetime! My childhood may have past, but my children are neck deep in it.

Living in the middle of the country and being blessed with three children, two boys and a girl, I have been made aware of the disproportionate sports play options for boys versus what is offered for girls. However, this limitation has not prevented my daughter from enjoying the empowerment provided by the interests that drive her. I have always reminded her of the power she possesses by reinforcing her in positive ways, even when it’s a male dominated interest. What is important here is that she believes in herself and follows her heart. My daughter isn’t really a tomboy and she’s definitely not the biggest sports nut, but she does enjoy playing baseball and soccer with her brothers and friends. She is quite the princess and her love for the arts is second to none. Her “sport” is what she derives from the right half of her brain. If it involves singing, dancing, or drawing she’s on it. It’s the air she breathes and my husband and I fully support her love for it. When my daughter was born I was so excited about all the possibilities she would have for herself when she grows up. She’s only seven years old, but my daughter has found her passion in the arts. She talks all the time about wanting to be a music teacher when all grown up and that makes me so incredibly proud of her. And one day, if she decides sports are more her thing, then my husband and I will be there on the sidelines to cheer her on- I may even dust off a few of my old jerseys and let her wear them to practice!

Pumpkin Masters: Get Creative with Pumpkin Carving

Earlier this week we all ran over to a small local pumpkin patch and let the kids run around for thirty minutes trying to find the perfect pumpkin for themselves. We had to remind our oldest that if he couldn’t pick it up it was probably a wee bit too bit for him. Our youngest though went immediately for the smallest pumpkins possible. It was adorable seeing him run to the baby pumpkins and ask for all of them. And our daughter, ever the meticulous one spent the longest trying to find that perfect pumpkin. I love watching her little mind work.

Pumpkin Masters Collage 2

The next day as soon as the kids got home from school we all went to work. The mission at hand? Operation Pumpkin Carving! I have always enjoyed carving pumpkins. I enjoyed doing it as a child and I enjoy doing it now with my children. I’ve come to learn that when we carve pumpkins it will work one way. The excitement, smiles, giggles and enjoyment from my kids lasts about halfway through the carving experience and then I end up finishing the project. Despite this happening and my fingers having blisters on them and my hands being tired I still go on to carve my pumpkin. It has happened this way since becoming a mom almost ten years ago and you know what? I am perfectly okay with that. Because even though the kids get tired of cutting and I end up finishing it it still allows us to spend time together while having fun together and creating memories. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

Pumpkin11

My go to carving kit? Pumpkin Masters. I remember using them as a kid so for me there is no other choice when it comes to kits for my family to use. And with them being so easily accessible since they are carried at almost all of our local retailers, drug stores and even craft stores I never have to worry about not finding a kit. This year was the first year I happened to notice the kits specifically for children and dude they.are.awesome! Having little one’s wanting to carve but not being able to is not only hard on the parents but for the children as well. There is nothing like watching your older siblings having a fun time and not being able to partake in the same activity. With the Kid Kits the pictures have pre-stamped holes in them so when you tape them to the pumpkin all they need to do is trace them with the provided crayon and it transfers on to the pumpkin very easily. Simply remove the paper and wha-la you have your pattern ready to go for your little one’s. I also noticed that the cutting knife included is thicker and duller then cutting knives provided in other kits. Much safer for those little hands which if you ask me is one of the most important things when carving pumpkins with my family. That an hearing the giggles and eww’s when the kids reach their hands into the pumpkin to remove the seeds and goop. Seeing their faces is just the cutest thing.

Pumpkin Masters Collage 4

Right now through October 31st Pumpkin Masters is having a fun contest where you can win one of SIX prizes which includes $5,000 for the Best Pumpkin decoration! If you are a pumpkin carving master make sure to enter. Here are three different ways you can enter. For official contest details click here.

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.
